CAPTAIN COOK HOLIDAY VILLAGE - SEVENTEEN SEVENTY - GURENG GURENG LAND

We spent 3 nights at the Captain Cook Holiday Village in Seventeen Seventy. The name is “holiday village”, it's really a caravan park with sites and cabins but in reality I would call it a bush camp and that’s how I plan on talking about it and rating it. It’s a wonderful little spot just before you get into the Seventeen Seventy township. You have your normal reception building at the front of the park, along with an awesome takeaway shop and Japanese food truck. The park has all the usual inclusions along with a pool, basic playground but also a small minigolf course ($5 per player). As mentioned, it is set amongst the bushland with even a four wheel drive track at the back of the property. We had a powered concrete slab site that backs on to a clearing before the bush takes over.

Now for the ABC4 review… (A = positives, B = unique/special, C = needs improvement, 4 = rating, ✅= additional tip)

[ A ] takeaway shop. Without a doubt the takeaway shop located at the front of the park is our choice for A. The shop is called Captain Cook Takeaway and not exclusive to those in the park. The first purchase from the shop was an awesome dino(saur) chicken nugget meal with chips and fruit juice. Our 3yo loved the experience of getting it from the shop. Later for dinner, a special of Coral Trout & Chips plus Chicken Schnitzel & Chips was purchased and all were first class takeaway meals. If you stay here or simply in the area - I definitely suggest visiting Captain Cook Takeaway. They do have some weird hours, opening and closing throughout the day and on different days, so be prepared for that 👍.

[ B ] 4WD track. As for uniqueness, a caravan park that has its own four wheel drive track ranks up there. It’s a basic track and very easy to drive if you have a 4WD. The track leads to a dog friendly, off leash beach. The end of the track stops short of the beach with an easy 100m or so walk to the beach itself. Make sure you do the track if you stay at the park!

[ C ] renovation needed. Sadly for the time we were there, the male toilets closest to our van were out of order. Not a huge walk to the other set of amenities but it’s more about saying that improvements at this park would definitely involve renovating the amenities and roads around the park. If you look at the park like I have, as more of a bush camp, then I’d almost say no improvements. Sometimes things like the rough access roads are part of the experience.

[ 4 ] 3 out of 4. If I was to compare this park with all other caravan parks then the score would be closer to 2. But taking into account the area and the features of the park, then 3 out of 4 is spot on.

💰 $47 a night for a powered slab site. A reasonable price given the area is very touristy.

✅ Be prepared for mosquitos and sandflies/midges. You absolutely need the best possible protection from mosquitoes and sandflies/midges. The area is rife with them but it’s just part of being in this area and in no way can reflect the park itself. Despite our best efforts, we definitely came away with the familiar red welts from them.
