BARRACRAB CARAVAN PARK - CLAIRVIEW - YUWI LAND

Like so many “big lappers” that can easily stay at off-grid locations, our original plans for the Clarview / Sarina area was to stay at Notch Point (highly rated as one of the best free camps in QLD). Next option was Camila Beach Campground which is a council run park but still with a bit of adventure with some of the sites with sand access, etc. But, after a lot of rain and some, let’s just say bad-luck, we decided to go with a more standard type of park with a playground for our 3yo. We heard a lot of positives about BarraCrab from fellow travellers so it was the spot we chose.

We stayed 2 nights and ended up choosing a powered slab site for convenience. With a lot of rain during our stay, we are glad we went for this option but it has to be said, the unpowered section has a lot more space and stunning views of the mud flats / water.

It has to be said, overall BarraCrab is a basic caravan park. Don’t expect any of those modern resort-type facilities. But do expect plenty of like minded travellers with fantastic staff and everything you actually need at a caravan park.

Now for the ABC4 review… (A = positives, B = unique/special, C = needs improvement, 4 = rating, ✅ = additional tip)

[ A ] location. This park is what you call an “absolute beachfront”. It is right on the water with many sites having views onto the water. The area is home to a Dugong sanctuary and there are also plenty of turtles around (note: we saw turtles while fishing north of the caravan park, did not see any Dugongs though 🙂).

[ B ] bar. It’s hard to beat a caravan park with its own bar! It’s a wonderful, basic bar (with some of the facilities moonlighting as a camp kitching). We had a beer/wine or two each night and enjoyed a meal on our second night. The food is your standard pub-fare with decent servings. The park asks that if you plan to eat dinner at the bar that you pre-order during the day. Now don’t expect draught (tap) beer here but I was able to enjoy a few bottles of Little Creatures Pale Ale which is certainly something in the land of XXXX and Great Northern.

[ C ] amenities. Foremost, the amenity block was very clean and more than suitable for your basic needs. However, if there was something that could be improved it would be the amenities. The showers are old with the heads fixed so you could not direct water flow. It does however “fit” with the rest of the camp, this is one of those places you use to stay a few days to unwind during your travels and along with its age this is all expected.

[ 4 ] 3 out of 4. The location alongside the bar with an awesome little playground means this park gets to enjoy a 3 out of 4 rating from us.

💰 $53 a night. For an oceanfront, powered slab site. Certainly on the more expensive side for a basic park and looking back, unpowered would have a better option. But, it wasn’t where our headspace was at the time and we don’t feel like we overspent.

✅ Get in early on one of the unpowered oceanfront sites and sunrise over the mud flats is spectacular.
